Grammar

Nelson Thornes Framework English

French

This term students work in the context of travel and holidays. They learn about different means of transport and learn to ask about, describe and understand descriptions of journeys and holidays (both in France and in other countries). Whilst working in these contexts, students further develop their understanding and use of the passé composé, especially with the use of être as an auxiliary verb. Unit 5 also provides opportunities for students to formulate a wider range of questions, build more complex sentences, read and write extended accounts in the past and research aspects of French-speaking countries and culture.

In unit 6 students  work in the context of places in town and the main tourist attractions of Paris. They learn some new vocabulary for places in town as well as revising words they already know; they also learn how to understand and give directions, which revises the imperative. Progress continues to be made on different tenses: the unit practises the perfect tense, the imperfect (c’etait + adjective), the future (aller + infinitive) and the present tense, and also provides opportunities for students to use a variety of tenses together within the same piece of work. There is a strong focus on dictionary skills, and students receive step-by-step guidance on how to improve their written work, including checking for errors. Pronunciation skills are further developed through work on the French r sound.
